Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 Smartphone Specs, Review and Best Cheapest Deals in India @ Rs.28490

It's a tablet. Or a phone? Or both??? Or may be a new hybrid category – but it has some of the best specs around and Samsung's hoping this will ship by the bucketload. It occupies a niche in Samsung's Galaxy range, bridging the gap between other Galaxy-series smartphones such as the Galaxy S II and tablets such as the Galaxy Tab.

The Samsung Galaxy Note is a phone/ tablet hybrid that doesn't really sit in any category - we've reviewed it as a smartphone simply due to the fact it can make calls, but Samsung is definitely trying to create a new category of device with this 5.3-inch screened behemoth. -Techradar
The box may not allude to it, but the Samsung Galaxy Note is big. Some may even say comically big. But it’s not just big on the outside, it’s big on the inside too.

Overview:

SAMSUNG Galaxy Note, with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), ready to blow your mind with its classy and attractive appearance with a display of 5.3 inches WXGA Screen & HD Super AMOLED, which provides a great view in one glance.
Phone has been introduced with some of the striking features like Dual Camera with Main (Rear) which is 8 megapixels with LED Flash & Front which is 2 megapixels.
It has a powerful 1.4 GHz dual core processor and 16 GB memory, while allowing MicroSD cards up to 32 GB. Video Recording with Full HD Recording & Playback/ Audio File Formats include MP3, AAC, AMR, WMA, WAV, FLAC, OGG with SoundAlive. Samsung offers an Advanced Smart Pen combined with Full Touch Screen creates a new mobile input experience with sketching, creating and writing.

BenchMark Index:

AnTuTu benchmarking gave it a whopping score of 6394.2. The closest phone competitor was the Samsung Galaxy S2 which scored 5334.3, while the closest tablet PC competitor was the Samsung Galaxy Tab which scored 4782.6. Thats good with Samsung always saying "What Next?"

Design:

To look at the Note, it looks just like a larger version of the S2. Though Samsung Galaxy Note is one monster of a phone! It is gigantic, and it really doesn't feel like anything you've used before. And if you're the type of person who is wondering with the size of Galaxy S II , then you will awe until you see this guy. Its dimensions come in at 146.85 x 82.95 x 9.65mm yet, at 178g, it's fairly light considering how heavy it could have been.

The Samsung Galaxy Note is made of plastics, but it doesn't feel cheap at all. The device is solid, and even the capacitive stylus stays very firmly in its spot, and requires a bit of force to be removed.

The front side houses 2MP camera and light sensor almost invisible though. The left hand side holds only a volume rocker, the top houses the 3.5mm headphone jack and there's a power/lock-unlock button on the right. The micro USB charging and syncing port can be located on the bottom.

Screen and Display:

The 5.3″ Super AMOLED (no Plus) screen is capable of 1280×800 resolution and it is absolutely gorgeous. This is one area where the Galaxy Note performs admirably, having an 1280x800 pixel res, which translates into 285 ppi which means richer colors, deeper contrast levels and wide viewing angles. We're happy to say that everything be it reading, browsing, gaming, and sometimes just sitting and admiring the screen, were all a pleasure.

Another thing worth noting about the screen is that it is Gorilla glass and it is indeed scratch resistant.

Hardware and Software Specs:

Hardware specifications of the device include:
  • Dual-core 1.4GHz processor ARM Cortex-A9 processor
  • Mali-400MP GPU, Exynos chipset
  • 5.3" HD Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with Gorilla Glass display
  • 8-megapixel main camera that can record 1080p video, and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera
  • 802.11 b/g/n support for Wi-Fi
  • HSPA+ 21Mbps 850/900/1900/2100 mobile network support.
  • positioning using both the a-GPS and GLONASS systems.
  • Accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate
  • TouchWiz UI v4.0
  • Proximity sensor for auto turn-off
  • Gyroscope sensor

The operating system is Android 2.3.5 "Gingerbread", but Samsung plans to release an upgrade to Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich" during 2012.

Another interesting feature is motion controlling, which includes things like “Tilt to zoom” and “Shake to update”. Some may find them useful, but most will feel that it’s a gimmick and will be irritated at the popups that jump out asking if you want to enable the feature (which will only not reappear again if you explicitly tell them to).

Camera and Multimedia:

There's an 8MP camera employed by the Samsung Galaxy Note, coupled with a single LED flash. The camera interface is the standard one for TouchWiz 4.0, which is a good thing because it works pretty fast. It also offers some nice goodies such as Anti-Shake function, different Scene modes, etc.

Outdoor images taken with the Samsung Galaxy Note turn out OK. We're not fascinated by the stills from the 8MP camera, but they are passable. The Galaxy Note does well when it comes to indoor photography. The LED flash will get the job done if you're shooting at a relatively close range, but don't expect anything spectacular. It isn't strong enough to illuminate bigger rooms.

Video can be recorded at up to 1080p, and we've got to say that it does look pretty good. The image is rich on colors and details, although there's some distortion observed if you move the camera too quickly. If you aren't in a hurry though, you should end up with some pretty nice footage.

The 2MP front-facing camera performed admirably, and should be more than adequate for video calling (or a Google+ Hangout).

Sound and Call Quality:

Sound quality through the rear speaker was good, though the bundled headphones were slightly disappointing. Call quality was good on our end, and recipients said that everything sounded fine on theirs too. Though some sites reported some issues with the call quality!

Battery life:

A 2,500mAh battery should give you plenty of juice – but considering the size of the screen, battery life was excellent. After a full day of use that involved some reading, lots of picture-taking, and lots of browsing and social networking, the battery was at 27%. With less use, we could make it through a day or may be two days.

S-Pen and Notes:

The Galaxy Note comes with a stylus which Samsung calls the "S Pen", which in itself is compact and has it’s own holding space in the Note. The pen can also be used to write with (shocking!), and this is best done in the app preloaded by Samsung called “S Memo”.

It can simply replace the use of a finger in situations where precision is needed, but it is also equipped with a "shift" button, which when pressed enables other functions such as grabbing screenshots (which can then be drawn on using the stylus) or starting the S-Note note-taking application.

Overall, the implementation of the pen is good, but I think it will really only appeal to those that don’t think the stylus is dead yet.

Conclusion:

With all this said, what is the Galaxy Note? It’s a device with one of the most impressive spec sheets out there, that runs like a dream, is placed in an excellent package, and boasts a pile of great multimedia capabilities. It’s a very compelling device.

Yet Samsung Galaxy Note is a niche product. It's not a phone designed to take over the mass market. The big dimensions of the Note make it much more uncomfortable to handle and use than any other smartphone. Just to give you an example, the device's size means that it's absolutely impossible to use it with one hand only.

The nearest device we can think it compares to is the HTC Flyer though that's been out a while now and is already being reduced in price. For some buyers it could very well be a choice between the Galaxy Note and Galaxy S2 and with the only real differences being size and the 'S-Pen', there's not much in it.

Leaving the enormous screen and dimensions aside, the Samsung Galaxy Note is a pretty decent smartphone, equipped with powerful hardware, delivering zippy performance with all tasks, no doubt, but it makes size a very relevant factor.
